SECTION 05520 - PIPE HAND AND RAILING
PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 WORK INCLUDED:
A. Furnish pre-engineered aluminum or stainless steel
railing system.
1.02 REFERENCE STANDARDS:
A. B.O.C.A. National Building Code
B. ASTM E985, standard specification for permanent metal
railing systems and rails for buildings.
C. ADA, Americans with disabilities act accessibility
guidelines.
D. AWS D1.2, American Welding Society
E. NAAMM, National Association of Architectural Metal
Manufacturers
1.03 SUBMITTALS:
A. Provide shop drawings and product data under provisions
of section (01300).
B. Indicate scope of project, component details,
materials, finish, connection and joining methods, and the relationship to adjoining work.
1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE:
A. Railing systems are based upon SterlingDula Architectural
Products, Inc. as a standard of quality. Equivalent railing systems of other manufacturers
may be acceptable, if in the judgment of the engineer, they meet the intent of the
specification in terms of design, function, materials and quality of workmanship.
B. Design criteria: railing assemblies (including top
rail, bottom rail, pickets, post and connections) shall be designed to conform with all
applicable building codes and loading requirements.
1.05 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND
HANDLING:
A. Deliver materials to the job site in good condition and
properly protected against damage to finished surfaces.
B. Keep handling on site to a minimum and exercise care to
avoid damage to finishes of material.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURER:

2.02 MATERIALS: - Welded Pipe System (Choose
Material)
A. All tube and pipe to be 6063-T5 or T6 or 6061-T6 alloy
aluminum.
or All tube and pipe to be type 304 stainless steel.
B. All fasteners to be aluminum or stainless steel.
2.03 FINISHES: (Select One)
A. Baked enamel meeting AAMA 603 requirements. Color to be
selected by the architect from manufacturers standard colors.
B. Kynar baked enamel meeting AAMA 605 requirements.
C. Clear anodized meeting NAAMM AAMIOC22A31 (aluminum
only).
D. Color anodized meeting NAAMM AAMIOC21A42 (aluminum
only).
E. #4 polish (stainless steel only).
F. Mill finish.
2.04 RAILING SYSTEM:
A. Railing system
B. Railing top rail
C. Railing picket (if applicable).
1. Spaced at O.C. (4", 5" or 6").
D. Railing mount (embedded, surface or side).
2.05 FABRICATION:
A. Railing shall be shop fabricated and assembled per
approved shop drawings to the greatest extent possible. Assembly shall be in a neat,
craftsmanship manner in accordance with the highest industry standards.
B. Joints to be coped and tig welded by certified welders (AWS D1.2). Welds to be smooth as cast or ground smooth (specify one).
C. Changes in direction to be made by bending, if
possible, or by mitering and welding.
D. Field splices to be minimized as much as possible,
depending on parameters set by material, finish and shipping. Field splices to be made
with internal splice sleeves pop riveted into ends of pipe.
E. General contractor to verify dimensions on site prior
to fabrication.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 INSTALLATION:
A. Install work in accordance with final shop drawings and
manufacturers instructions.
B. Erect work plumb, square and level, free from
distortion or defects detrimental to appearance or performance.
3.02 CLEANING:
A. As installation is completed, wash railing using clean
water and soap, rinse with water.
B. Do not use acid solution, steel wool or other harsh
abrasives.
